UNIVERSITY JUST FAIL TO PASS
SCHOOLS IN NORTH-EAST REGATTA
PAUL THIRD

Aberdeen Schools were crowned champions of the
North-east Regatta on the river Dee yesterday. They survived a day of
success from Aberdeen University yesterday to claim the title with 109
points. The schools team won only three points yesterday, with 106 claimed
on Saturday, but the points proved decisive as Aberdeen University's final
total of 107 fell two points short. St Andrews Boat Club of Edinburgh was
third on 63 points with Aberdeen Boat Club finishing fourth on 56.
Points are scored on the number of people in each final. A single sculls win
earns the winning boat club two points while an eights win earns 16 points.
One point is awarded per person to the losing finalist.
Regatta secretary Ron Wallace hailed the two-day event a major success.
He said: "It was a fitting finale to the event. The majority of the schools'
races were done on Saturday as they have exams to contend with, but the
small number of teams taking part played their role with the vital three
points.
"With 92 crews competing on Saturday and 73 today, it's been a marvellously
well attended event and we're delighted.
"With races from single sculls to eights, there has been something for
everyone over the two days and, thankfully, the weather has been kind to us.
"Aberdeen Boat Club's feat of becoming the first Scottish team to win at the
Henley Regatta last year has really got interest going in rowing and those
in attendance this weekend will have enjoyed top quality racing I'm sure."
Performance of the weekend went to Kerr Neave of Aberdeen Schools. Having
claimed his novice victory, Neave was a substitute in the winning men's R1
fours team.
Wallace said: "It really was a remarkable achievement from Kerr. His two
wins are comparable to passing your driving test then winning Formula One on
the same day."
